Diploma in Nautical Science
 
1 year course consisting 2 semester exams are conducted as per guidelines given by IMU. After passing the exams, the cadets will be awarded Diploma In Nautical Science by IMU. The cadets will be joining the vessel as a trainee cadet. They will have to obtain 18 months sea service (it will take approx. two years to complete this ). With this experience, they will undergo a 4 months second mate's foundation course and will be eligible to appear for 2nd mate exams. After passing this they will be promoted as a Third officer on board any merchant navy vessel.

This Diploma in Nautical Science also leads to B.Sc degree in Nautical Science by IMU. During the first 18 months of sea service, IMU will conduct the Distance learning programme (DLP) by giving the study material. With further experience and exams, they will be promoted to Chief Officer and then the Captain of the Ship.

 
  General Information About Dns Course
1. Diploma in Nautical Science leading to a B.Sc. Nautical Science awarded by Indian Maritime university, Chennai, after Vth Semester where 1st and 2nd Semester is a residential course each of 6 months period. The Rest of 3 Semesters is DLP and completed on Boardship, after which the Cadet appears for COC exams as 2nd Officer (F.G.), conducted by DGS (MOS) and serves as Navigating Officer on board Merchant Navyship all around the Globe.
2. The Physics Lab. of SSNSA is well equipped to provide the Cadet with equipments to familiarize with the ship board equipments, like Numatics and Hydraulics, Statics, Dynamics, Magnetism, etc.
3. The Chemistry Lab. is also well equipped to cater for the study of ship board Corrsion and reactions with Chemicals, Carriage of oily substance, like Crude oil, Petroleum, etc.
4. The EEE Lab. is equipped for study of Basics of Electricity/Electronics to ship board equipments like remote and cut off switches which are used on board ship extensively.
5. The Computer Lab. facility based on the programmes used by the ships staff on board, like various Basics, files, internet programmes, communication, Navigation, and Cargo work related programmes.
6. This Lab. is specially catering a very important topic for making a Sea going Career for the Cadets equipped with the lot of equipments, on board topics like Basic Seamanship, Cargo Work, Fire Fighting Equipments, and Life Saving Appliances used on board the ship.
7. This Lab. is also very special subject of learning for the Cadets, as they ultimately become Navigating Officer on board a ship, and is equipped with all the equipments used in Navigating a ship, and a True replica of the Navigating Bridge of a Modern Day ship.
8. The Navigating stimulator gives the Cadet an Insight of steering various types of ships in various types of weather condition, and along the coast, at sea, and approaching ports, and in narrow channel.
9. The Marine Engg. Workshop is a full fledged, equipped with the Marine Engine parts, like a oil purifier etc., and tools used in the Engine Room of a ship, as well as for plumbing, Carpentery, foundary, welding and gas cutting, where the Cadets are given Basic knowledge of a Marine Engine, etc.
10. The Flag Mast is the proud Symbol of a ship, and carrys the National flag, and plays a very important symbolic role in the Training programmes of a Maritime Academy, and it's a true replica of a ship mast ashore.
11. Class Rooms are spacious, airy, and well equipped for a batch of 40 Cadets, with the Teaching facility like OHP, LCD'S, Computer, White Board, and a Glass BlackBoard.
12. The Library is well stocked with Reference Books in Navigation and allied subjects of Maritime education, and the Cadets have accessesto it throughout, and can borrow books for reference, plus material, like Daily English, and Hindi Newspapers/Magazines, and Journals on shipping etc.
13. Chart rooms are provided for batch of 40 Cadets, with Chart Table, and other allied equipments for homing their skills in practical Navigation of ship at Sea.
14. Hostel Facilities, being a residential course is at par with one of the best academy providing Maritime Education, where 4 Cadets share a room, with individual lockers, writing table with table lamp.
15. The Dinning Hall and Galley is of very hygienic standard and Food served to the Cadets of the DNS, is catered to the palate of the Cadets, wholesome, and menu is maintained Daily. The Galley or Kitchen is maintained with high quality of hygine and Food preparation is done in a very professional manner.
16. Being a Maritime Academy, and training imparted is related to Marine, the staff or Faculty is more of Marine based, and ship's officers with sailing, experience, as Nautical faculty and Instructors, also employed other teaching Faculty for non-professional subjects.
17. Outdoor sports facilities provided for the Cadets like Volley Balls, Cricket etc, and P.T. and Games are mandatory every day for the Cadets.
18. Indoor Sports, like a well equipped Gyms, Table Tennis is provided and the Cadets are access to these every day.
19. Port visit is organised for the Cadets, and taken to Ennor Port at at Tamilnadu for a Port /ship visit which is a very integral part of their training, and boarded a Bulk carrier at port.
20. Cadets participated in the IMU Anniversary Day in 2010 at Chennai, and took part in the Marathon conducted at the Marina Beach, where the First and Second Prize was won. They also took part in the Cultural extravagence in the campus and put up a good show. Cadets who participated in the Institute of Engineers, Bangalore, where papers were presented by eminent Engineers on Marine Engineering and its concept, and growth in our country towards Modern Technology, like under water vehicle etc.
21. Since the life of a Cadet when he passes out from the Academy is spent on the water, he is taught the rudiments of handling a boat, and for this purpose he is taken to a lake, where there is boating facility and rudiments of boat handling is imparted.
22. Since life at sea is also depended on the art of swimming, for survival the Cadets are taken for Swimming Classes, and taught the rudiments of Floating / Swimming.
23. Other facilities provided are they have access to job placement with shipping company through the Placement Cell, the Academy helps in obtaining their CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate), and INDOS Numbers and complete the STCW Modular courses, which are all mandatory.
